The Managing Director of the Originals News Network, Gail Brodrick has published an article in the most recent edition of The Portal Magazine. Please check page 32 for the article. Congratulations Gail … and don't think that will lighten your duties at the network.

The Originals after a somewhat shaky regular season in which they not only had trouble scoring runs, but played unusually ineffective defense had a great day - first outlasting the Gorillas in a tense battle and then eeking out a win against last years championship Sultans. This is our first time taking home the "new" Consolation Trophy.

According to Gail, "Well, what a great day yesterday!! After winning both games we are the Consolation champs!! We finally got the bats going and managed 20 runs against the Sultans!! Amazing games and the weather was great!

We missed Rohan, Mark and Emma but hope that they are enjoying their holidays. The Originals had a great team this year with great people and I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone next season. I thank everyone for pitching in this year. Helping set up the equipment, taking score, yelling out the order, base coaching and batting practice.

What a team!!"

Yesterday our own Alice Whitenect was the recipient of the RCBA Hall of Fame award.

The always jovial Alice has been in the league 24 years and is well known by everyone. Famous for chatting with every batter that comes up to plate, for her favourite saying "Let's just have fun" for her energy and positive attitude and for her "goodbye" tours at the bar.

Congratulations Alice!!

At a recent meeting of the Originals Hall of Fame nominating committee, various old timers where elected and added in the "veterans" category, Shawn Lawrence, Rossie Gross, Danny LeBlanc, and sisters Linda and Jennifer Argles.

Congratulations to all inductees!

September 2nd, 2009

Today during a virtual meeting of the Hall of Fame committee there were 3 new nominations presented and seconded and unanimously voted on by all present at the meeting. It is with great pleasure that I announce the 3 newest inductees into the Originals Hall of Fame - Shawn Van Hees, Gail Brodrick, and Tyler Longo - with some kind words supplied by Mitch Gold, one of the league founders and understanders of its intentions.

"Each of the nominees have brought the highest values to the league - in their personal deportment, their desire to have fun, and to play well."

"Tyler is almost a living symbol of the league - he rounded second base when he was in his mothers womb. Not many players can say that. He plays well, does the best he can - from when he was bat boy, score keeper, and now respected by the opposition as batter and in the future as manager? To be in the Hall of fame at 20 is an accomplishment well deserved - but what will he do for an encore? In some leagues you have to retire before you are eligible for the Hall of Fame - perhaps we might consider some special Trophy for Tyler - this may bear greater thought - it may be too easy just to elect him to the Hall of Fame."

"I think that Gail has done an incredible job - her e-mails always inspired me - where ever I was on the planet, causing me to envision myself there at the game - having fun. Her management of the team for the last few years has kept the flame burning, and we all owe her a debt of gratitude for that."

"Shawn has over the last dozen years been one of the stalwarts of the team and a great contributor to its success. Even though I am seconding his nomination - I have the thought that he needs to quit smoking. I would not be me if I did not point this out."

"So in my own way as seconding the nominations, I am giving some additional food for thought . . . "

  • "for Tyler, some new Trophy honoring his contribution - the Tyler Trophy, or the Longo Trophy honoring Tyler, and his mother and father who helped make the League what it is today. Perhaps a yearly given honour to the "new" family member that comes to the games - this could even be won by a spectator - as we have had many of those over the years."
  • "for Gail - if she has not been so honored yet - the Wally Steffoff Award should surely be in her future."
  • "and for Shawn - a challenge to quit smoking and be the best he can be."
